My 3 packages with my chicken coop just came in the mail a few minutes ago. I am so excited and can't wait to start building this weekend!

Just so you know the tinkering never stops. Do you have a feeder yet? Here is the one that I made. It holds about 4 gallons of feed. I take it out to the coop in a five gallon bucket. :

It keeps them from spilling and scratching the feed all over the place. The gadgets that some people come up with on here are amazing.

That is a really good idea for the feeder! I am so excited. I got one of the coops off wholesalechickencoops.com

Congrats on your new coop!

I also got good ideas from this board. (you can see our project on my BYC page)

I didn't build one like KingJamesIV did cuz I didn't want old feed sitting 4ever at the bottom of the pvc pipe with the new pellets resting on top . I also wanted a top on mine to keep out the dust etc that can form on top of the feed til it waits to move down the pipe.

Here's the one we did-the top is closed in for cleanliness and they never waste a pellet.

Also, the inserted piece of plexiglass lets me see when to add feed.

Great idea... but how do you fill it? I am a short person, and I would have a hard time lifting a 25lb or 50lb bag of chicken feed up hgh enough to put it in the pipe.

It holds just over 1/3 commercial feed bag, so I use a big plastic scoop I bought at the thrift store.
It's quite easy to do. I have 12 laying hens and they really don't eat all that much.

You can also cut the pipe shorter than what we did. I'm 5' 8 so this height works ok for me.
