Got 9 chicks today! I'm so excited for my first ever babies. Was able to find a feed store that orders vaccinated 1 day old chicks, and got my first group today. Chicken math is already in effect, since the plan was to get 6 and I brought home 9. I got:
1 lavender Orpington- my 8 year old was obseseed with one of these babies at a different store and was bawling when we didn't bring it home.
1 black australorp
1 blue australorp
1 splash australorp
1 Barnvelder
1 Prairie bluebell (planned on an easter egger or Ameraucana but they didnt get any)
1 Speckled sussex
1 silver lace wynadotte
1 gold laced wynadotte

I have my brooder set up with a 16 inch Brooder plate, multiple waterers, and a feeder. I planned on just using the brooder, but was told at the feed store I really need to use a lamp too, and keep the room around 80. I wasn't planning on using a lamp at all, and the room the chicks are in is around 65. they are eating and drinking, and have been out today and not spenidng all their time under the brooder plate. two of them did have pasty butt that I washed and dried, but otherwise they seem well. Do you think I need to add an additioanl heat source? So excited for the these girls and want the best for them!

Thank you!

Congratulations on your new chicks! We recently got some too! They are so fun!:)
I don't think they need a additional heat source. If the brooder is to hot, they will go as far away from the brooder as they can. If the brooder is too cold, then they will all huddle under it. If it is just right, they will be evenly distributed under the brooder! We have one red bulb heat lamp and it is just right for our 3 and a half week old chicks. Your brooder set up looks just right! I hope that helps!:thumbsup

CONGRATULATIONS!!! They're adorable, and you are going to have a gorgeous flock!

Watch their behavior. If they huddle and seem cold (they will get loud if uncomfortable), then consider another heat source. But your set up looks good to me.

I use a heating pad cave, and it works great for me. There's no one right way to go.

All nine chicks are still doing well. My brooder is working great so far. The chicks are all over exploring and I have the brooder plate at an angle and they seem to love it. The room they are in is about 65 and they spend plenty of time out and about and not under the plate, so I’m thinking temps are just fine for them. They seem to be figuring out the horizontal nipples though still mainly drink from the other waterer. Thanks to everyone on this site. I’ve learned so much by reading here! I still can’t tell which breed is which for a few of my chicks, but hopefully will be able to tell as their feathers come in.

Post pics of your unknown breeds in the breed/gender ID forum (can't remember the exact name). The community will help you out!
