got my coon

well caught another last night. Looked out the window and there was another coon in the trap. Marshmallows work really good for coons. We have set the trap six nights and caught 4 coons. This last one doesn't look very big. The first was so big he could not turn around in the trap. these last 3 are not quite that big. All have been males so far, don't know what this last one is yet. drinking my morning coffee right now, then getting rid of the coon. Y'all have a happy chicky day, mine just got a little better.

You must have a lot of coons! We had a 2 week period once where we wiped out 20. They just keep coming back it seems. Good job figuring out what works though!

we took the borrowed trap back home and bought our on trap. Set it last night with marshmallows and its empty this morning. although one or some of the marshmallows were out of the cage, no coon.. my friend had put 1/2 inch hardware cloth around the sides to keep the coons from reaching in and getting the marshmallows. seems that I may have to do the same. We have some leftover cloth so that chore will be completed today and reset the trap tonight. Happy Chicky Day and good luck hunting and trapping.

well we haven't caught a coon in the new trap yet. maybe caught all of them, lol. we have caught several other critters though. We caught a red bird the first day, then 2 doves, and last night a bunny. well maybe the coons are taking some time off. we are going to keep the trap set a few more days, then it will get a rest for a week or 2. we are going to wipe down the coop to remove the old foot prints and keep a lookout for new ones. Y'all have a happy chicky day.

not sure if it makes a difference, but I wash mine out after every "catch". I just use water hose, no chemical or anything, but I do get all the grass and mud and whatever else may be left. (they seem to dig alot when trapped - making a mess) I just know, when i "rested" for a week, I lost 3 more chickens. Marshmallows are cheap... so I don't think I'll be resting much right now. I also put cinder blocks behind, on top, and on either side of the back part so they can't tip it or reach in. I have my trap actually backed up against the back of my chicken house, as that's where they seem to come... they find those marshmallows, though, and I imagine them saying "chickens? What chickens?"

We didn't set the trap Friday or Saturday. Reset it Sunday and it rained all night and didn't catch anything. Last night we caught another. Going to dispatch and burry him later. Knew we had a problem with coons, just not this bad. possums are bad but coons are worse.
Don't think they can get in the coop, once its shut up at night, but I am going to recheck everything. y'all have a happy chicky day.

I always keep ours baited & set. I also wash ours out with the water hose before we reset it, I bait ours with cat food....

Glad I found this thread! Some great tips. Had a coon trapped last night, but he got out. No worries, I've got it set up with 2 sides against concrete. I'll stake the other side with T posts to keep it from moving. I'm going to put a beef soup bone in the back & a trail of wet dog kibble to lead him in. Thought I'd change the menu in hopes of getting same coon or even another one. Crossing my fingers!

I first got a trailcam just to see what came around the Chicken Coop at night------what an eye opener. I pretty much keep a live trap set now for mostly Raccoons, but I've seen the neighbors dogs, foxes, cats, deer, and other visitors.
