Got my first babies on Sunday!

Hello

Welcome to BYC!! I’m glad you joined us!

Hello all!

My name is Becky and I have a new addiction.

I have been wanting to raise chickens for eggs for a couple years now. I am finally in place to do it and started reading and collecting materials to build a coop around February. S/o works for a company that gets a lot of pallets he can bring home and we’ve been slowly building a tiny house so we have lots of scrap that was otherwise going to be tossed or burned. With the price of lumber these days I don’t think we could afford to build the coop otherwise.

S/O has been slow on the wanting chickens front. That was until we stopped by TSC Saturday evening to get wood pellets for the unexpected chilly weather of the weekend. He usually isn’t with me when I get pellets so this time he came face to face with the chicks! Sunday he built a coop while I went to two different TSCs for different chicks. One had bantams (I wanted a couple, especially silkies for pets) and the original one had gold laced Wyandottes which was the breed I wanted to go with for eggs and possible meat down the line.

I am now the proud and nervous momma of 16 chicks. Three of the bantams are definitely silkies. The other three I am guessing are some type of old English game (pictures and questions will be posted in appropriate areas). I got 10 of what should be gold laced Wyandottes but 8 of them I am not sure. They are older chicks and look nothing like the two I know are GLW but I don’t care too much as long as they are healthy and lay eggs. In the future we’ll probably add more chickens, a handful of ducks (s/o wants them as pets) and a turkey or two to raise for thanksgiving dinner.

I also have two dogs, an 11 year old retired sled dog and a 3 year old teacup yorkie (technically the yorkie is my s/o’s), a cat and one fish tank with a betta, one remaining ember tetra and a dwarf crayfish that wasn’t supposed to be there.

I grow orchids as a hobby and sell them online for a living. I’ve started my first garden this year as well using cinder blocks as raised beds. It still has a ways to go, but what’s there is doing well! I also enjoy landscaping and am getting into scaping with native plants.
Welcome!! I too got my first chicks as an adult 3 weeks ago, 13 Australorps, the gang is doing amazingly well!! Love the babies!! Good luck. FYI I also built my own coop. Chick-Mahal.
