It simulates an egg, and they will (should) start using the nest box instead of everything else.
I have a buddy that did it with plastic golf balls, and it worked like a charm.

the first of our seven just started laying about a week ago. she laid a couple on the ground and now has picked the top corner of the hen house. i put plastic easter eggs in the next boxes where i want them to lay, but they're not into it. i also tried putting REAL eggs in them, but nobody's laid in the boxes yet. hmmmm....

Congrats on your first egg! Very, very exciting. I still find it exciting months later to go out and see eggs. The golf balls didn't work with my chickens at all but luckily they all use the nesting box (have three, they only like one location).
