OK ..I have looked for a few hours on this forum and I cant find what I need so I'm going to ask... so I have 8 girls and they just started laying today .. I got 5 so far today .. here is the question I have ...

1. Once the hen lays the egg how long do I have to "pick" it and put it in the fridge so it wont go bad .. days? hours?

2. How long should I store the egg in the fridge prior to eating it. Does it require a cool down period..?

3. How long do I have to eat it.. I know store bought eggs have a exp date on them how would I put one on mine.. do I have weeks or months for this..

4. this is not about laying but a general question .. Should I have a night light in the coop.. right now I have a light in the coop but once the light is turned off its dark. The coop is built into my shed so its not "air tight" but its "light tight" do they need a night light?

I think that's all I have right now .. Thanks for the replies

1. It's good to collect the eggs each evening, although sometimes I only collect mine every other day (and there've been a few times that I didn't collect till the third day

).

2. You can bring them in from the nest box and crack them open in a skillet - no waiting period needed.

3. The eggs you get from the grocery are about a month old by the time you buy them, so that should tell you something....

4. A nightlight is not needed. That being said I do keep one in my main coop. I do think a nightlight can serve as a predator deterrant...plus if I need to go out there for something, I don't have to turn the bright light on to do whatever I'm doing...

5. Congrats on your eggs!
