Got my flat panel coop heater!

I understand that some people disagree with heating coops. I feel it is an individual decision and I based mine on what is "normal" for my birds in my climate. I wanted a heater in there for those nights when it is uncharacteristically cold to the point of frozen water pipes like last week. I have been using the heater with a thermocube. It does not come on until the temp drops to 35 degrees and turns off when it reaches 45 degrees. That is the usual night time temp for my area and that is what they are used to. I am not trying to create a sauna experience for them, just to protect them from weather extremes. I hung a mister over their lounging area in the summer when it hit 114 degrees and they were panting and holding their wings out from their bodies.

That being said I haven't had any problems with the flat panel heater and sleep a lot better knowing that my California chickens are not freezing in their coop. Thanks for asking! I also have a 150 watt Sweeter Heater coming for my breeding pen. I'll let you know how that works out too. After the reports of coop fires from heat lamps I want no part of that!

I think I will look into flat panel heaters for my brooder & grower pens. They sound like the way to go. I have noticed that the more comfortable my birds are, the more eggs I get from them, and the healthier they are. I don't think it could possibly hurt to keep them reasonably warm with a heater.

I am in NH and have an Eco Heat flat panel heater. My coop is very insulated, so when we heat, the heat stays in the coop. The thermo cube makes it come on at 35, but our outlets are at roof level, so it is a few degrees colder down below. Once it gets to 42 (45 up where the outlet is at) the heater shuts off and it stays that way for hours if all windows are closed. My chickens love their warm coop and do not like to go out in the ultra cold too much. We have not seen high temps out of the teens lately, and the heater eases my conscience about keeping animals here. I know some people here keep their dogs and cats outdoors too, but that is just not for me. To each their own. So to those of us who heat, as long as we are doing it safely and with the best intentions of taking care of our flock, then there really shouldn't be too much debate. right??
