Got my flat panel coop heater!

My ducks who have been dealing with -15º weather for the past week just wanted me to tell you to tell your chickens that they are wimps.

What about using those heaters you place under a lizard tank. They are pretty in expensive and made to be underneath- you could warm up the roost that way maybe?

An acquaintance of mine who does reptile rescue uses the heating mats placed under dog houses for his giant tortoises; apparently the mats are very critter-proof, and designed specifically to be used around animals. I'm thinking about investigating one of those, because I don't need to raise the coop to room temp, I just want to take the edge off, keep it from falling below about 45-50.

I bought one of the flat panel heaters this fall from ebay. I hung it in my coop and attached it to a thermostatistically controlled outlet that turns on at 20 degrees and turns off at 30 degrees. I've been wondering if it was actually going to work or not. This morning it was 14 outside and when I opened the coop door I found that the indicator light on the flat panel was on, so it did turn on. I also noticed as I was pooper scooping out the poop this morning that my 3 girls had shifted their roost position from their normal side of the coop to the side of the coop with the heater (their dropping were on the side where the heater is and not the other side where they usually sleep). That tells me that they liked the heater.

My bantam ameracuna sleeps on top of my blue orphington for extra warmth. Why sleep on a cold pice of wood when you can snuggle down into a nice feather bed?

Just ordered a flat panel heater for our daughters new coop. We found it from http://eco-heaters.net/. The eco heater was 119.00 and it was $128 with shipping. We talked to them on the phone today and it will be shipped this week. Like the fact that we can put it on a thermostat and not have to keep remembering to unplug the heat buld when it warms up a bit. This is Wisconsin so warm is relative! From what I have read I hope this will work well just to keep the coop from being sub zero and freezing combs. The heater along with a new fully insulated coop with double pane windows, and yes ventilation too!

I have had a heating issue for years. I use infrared lamps above them but I also wrap the outside of the coop in 3ml plastic. It sure helps to keep the wind issue down. But these new type heaters are very interesting.

I am in Wisconsin to. And to be honest I would never think of heating my coop. These birds have been here long before us and I think it throws them off. If your coop is tight as mine is. I have 11 birds in a 6 x 8 coop and a thermostat in there. I have gone out in the mornings when is in the negatives and their coop is comfortably in the 20s with no heat. They then pop out to their run which is covered with plastic like solar heater and there are bails of straw to block the north winds and they are happy as can be.

I love my birds as much as everyone else but thing we tend to get carried away at time.

By the way Happy Holidays everyone
