Got my new fuzzy butts, but lost 1

Ive been worried about getting my latest fuzzies when I found out just Where My Pet Chicken gets their chicks, because I once ordered some from that place, and lost MOST of them due to packing issues, the fact that the hatchery somehow ended up sending the babies BACK to them.

I did get the babies in good time and they all looked great.

The next, (yesterday), I noticed that one of the little Millie Fleurs' eyes were closed !

She just stopped eating, her breathing became labored and she would just not open her eyes.

I even used warm water on a Qtip and gently rubbed it over her eyes. She opened them just for a second, then closed them again.

Ive seen this before with most of my group the time before last, so I knew she was a "failure to thrive" and was so tiny, so, I just made her comfortable in a different box with some water and a little food, just in case...

But sadly , I lost her at 5 am this morning..

I just hate losing them, ya know?

I believe she was a Millie Fleur..I ordered 2 Millies, 2 Cochins and 4 Silkies..

I had 2 very small brown ones, and now Im watching the last brown one for being bullied by the silkies..

She looks like she might be being kept away from food and water and is just sitting alone..so I just picked her up and dipped her beak in her water again and sprinkled feed on the floor of the brooder so she wouldnt have to go too far to find it..

Good news is when I picked her up, she did fuss , so she looks energetic..

Ill just keep an eye on her..

I only noticed it about 20 mins ago..

I thought Silkies were docile...maybe they are just typical hyper chicks then settle down and become loving..hope so..

Yes definitely sprinkle some food on the floor. I like to use paper towels on youngsters as it provides a solid gripping surface for young chicks, and an easy way to see crumbles. I have found some chicks do not like to use those chick feeders with the holes-they don't like putting their heads in them.



And chicks like to suddenly fall asleep so be careful of where your water is placed. They eat, sleep, zoom around, and drop off to sleep in an instant.

Good news is the last little Millie is zooming around and is just fine.
This year, instead of using pine chips in their brooder , I'm using those absorbent large bed pads and I layer 4 or 5 at a time so all I have to do is lift up one at a time, then there's a clean one already there. It works Great !!

I first tried using puppy pads before I got them to see if they would fit in the brooder.

They were perfect except for the strong perfume that's used in them.

I wasn't comfortable letting baby chicks peck around on it .

Was just reading about you mille, so sorry you lost one. And glad the other one is doing much better I hatched 5 bantam cochins and 3 silkies on Easter sunday and I am noticing the same thing. The silkies seem very hyper and a little more aggressive toward my cochins. I was under the same impression that silkies were quiet, friendly and docile. My 3 won't come near me. I too am hoping they well settle down a little as they get older. The cochins will not stop sitting on my hands when I'm trying to fill their feeders. They are all super cute though.
