Ordered 11 chicks. 1 was dead on arrival. Looked very small compared to the rest.
I checked all the new guys for pastey but, took all the 2 week old chicks out of the brooder, covered all the shavings with paper towel. Then, I put the new babies in the brooder. I showed them the food, water and light. After they settled, I put the 2 week olds back in the brooder. It was so funny, at first the bigger chicks just stood there, frozen. With this look of what the heck are these things? Then everyone started running, flapping...enjoying.
I was a bit nervous about putting them all together so quickly, but the little guys are feisty. They seem to be able to handle themselves very well. Of course I am out in the garage more than in the house. I am sure when my daughter gets home. she will be out the until bedtime.
I had to put the ducklings in their own brooder. It was the one I was gonna use for the babies. The ducks are just growing too fast. They are only a week and a half, but are 4 times bigger than the 2 week old chicks. Plus, they made everything a wet mess. With the chicks only 2 weeks old, I didn't want them sitting in wet bedding all day. This is the main reason that I put the new guys in with the older chicks. I figured only 2 weeks different in age, that can't be that bad, plus I read others doing it on here. So wish us luck. 20 chicks, 2 duckling...I am tired already! LOL!
