I have a Jack Russell, too. Well, he looks just like a Jack Russell. He was a rescue. He runs loose and was easily trained not to bother the chickens; already knew "no" and had to be told maybe 3 times; he never hurt a chicken, and leaves resident cats alone as well. Haven't seen him kill a coon or possum but I imagine he has; also haven't seen a coon or possum for months, and we used to see them all the time. I do know for sure he actively hunts rats and kills them, digging into their hole after them. Before we lost his companion, they would team up, choose two holes and dig toward each other. Not always successful, of course, but when they were, they killed some good sized rats -- not field mice, young possum sized things. They have also killed a few poisonous snakes -- one cottonmouth was really huge, big around as your arm, about 4' or 5' long.
Come to think of it, haven't seen a feral cat for ages, either; a few used to come around regularly.
He's a really sweet dog, too.
