I have two small coops and two largish covered runs here in WI. I switched to sand in the runs last year but didn't even consider using sand in the coops. Don't know why. Anyway, in the winter I did end up tossing some shavings over the sand because my feet were cold- kind of like telling your kids to put on a sweater because you're cold...... I went in this spring with a rake and most of the shavings raked up with the feathers and poo that hadn't been mixed in and got that cleaned up easily enough. I'll add more sand when I get some but now I'm definitely going to try sand in the coops. I'll probably use shavings in the winter- it just seems warmer to me and the poo freezes so the odor isn't bad. I scoop my coops almost daily and end up with more shavings than poo. I like composte as much as the next guy, but the poo alone will be plenty composte. Thanks for the great topic and your coop is amazing.
