Grain mites...

Ok, forgive my ignorance, but what are the benefits to transferring the feed to the 5 gallon buckets?
Not sure there is, unless as you transfer the feed from bag to buckets you mix in copious amounts of DE. That's what I do if I see them on bag.

Ok, forgive my ignorance, but what are the benefits to transferring the feed to the 5 gallon buckets? I am just wrapping up my first year of chicken ownership and still need to learn all of these things :D
That way it's easier to move & if there are any they cannot just crawl on out, but i did this before I knew there were grain mites!

Every time you buy new feed, just put it in the freezer for 2-3 days and after mix it with DE while decanting into your metal bins.
My freezer is not that big, or cold.
Why add DE if the freezer kills them?

They don't just float in out of the air, they come with the grain/feed.
I know, and feeding chickens there will be grain allover the place won't there?

They sometimes even come with cereals or granola packages, oatmeal packages, sesame packages etc. etc. ;)

And even with flour packages as well.
