Grammarians UNITE!

I love this thread

Here's my pet peeve: I was taught that when the word "the" appears in front of a word that begins with a vowel, such as "end" or "earth", "the" is pronounced as "thee"

as in

"Thee earth"

NOT

"Thuh earth"

I've heard network newscasters use this pronunciation!

One of the mispronunciation/misunderstandings that gets my feathers fluffed the use of the word "ideal" when they mean "idea." "I have a great ideal - let's get more chickens!"

I am the grammarian about whom your mother warned you.

Grrrr.

If one more ignorant manager at work offers to "orientate" somebody new, I will have to offer to orientate them right in the behind.

AND this morn on my local freecycle site, I saw an ad FROM A TEACHER, offering giveaway kids books, declaring

"I am an elementary school teacher which is moving out of town and so . . ."

I kid you not. I cringe to think of those little children, entrusted to uneducated barbarians with despicable grammar.

But it certainly is fun to listen to all of you get hot under the collar about this issue; glad I'm not the only one.

It's already been posted, but I'm posting again because it drives me crazy:

If you had something, and now you don't, YOU DIDN'T "LOOSE" IT!!!

"Loose" is the opposite of tight.

To "lose" something is to not be able to find something, or to have it taken away.

I see it all the time, and more and more often. Any third grader should be able to know the difference. I don't expect people to be able to diagram a sentence and tell me the subject and predicate and so forth, but some of the spelling I see is just cringe-worthy.
