I keep my current quail as pets.
I don't even know if Valley quail are any good for eating?? If their were they're not very common where I live so I wouldn't eat something that I am sure someone would happily buy from me for their aviary or something.
I have raised meat quail in the past and maybe one day in the future I will again.

If you seen my story you know we started this farm for the purpose of feeding my family specifically my wife who has Alpha-Gal. But I would like to get to a point where the farm will cover its own expenses so I can start farming full time.

If you know who Joel Salatin is then you have seen him make 200k a year on meat birds and 20 acres of land. I will never be able to do that with my small farm without leasing land off farm. But you have to start somewhere and that's where I am.

We plan to raise Quail, Chickens, Ducks, Turkey and eventually Emu.

Today we only have 18 hens who arent quite old enough to lay eggs and the Quail. I probably have 150 Quail today but will cull about 40 this weekend for Christmas Dinner. I have 120 eggs in the incubator. We are finally in a place where we make more eggs than our home can eat so I am starting to sell a few. eventually we want to sell live birds and packaged birds. As well as fertilized eggs.

Come spring I will build hoop coops or tractors and start with duck and turkey. we will see how well it does.

I'm going to be adding call ducks to my menagerie in the spring. I'll eat extras, but they're going to live in my atrium with the tilapia pond.

I'm looking at white Nile tilapia, which are pretty as well as edible.

Once all of my stuff is out of my greenhouse and into the house I'll be able to add more garden beds as well. I need to solve the heat issue during the winter, then I'll have veggies year round.

I have lots of plans but not enough time and money to get to them all. I wanted to have the green house built before winter and that stalled. I am going to try to get it built by March so we can start planting.

I have several raised beds I need to build. I have fruit trees to plant, I have 12 acres of forest that needs to be made into manageable pasture. the list keeps going.

I have enough hard sloped land I could dam up the top of one mountain and make a pond for fish. I have thought about it but I'm afraid with all the mining that took place here in the 30s-40s I have not found a fresh spring on my property to feed a pond.

I have .58 acres, which is a lot for suburbia. My house should be done next month, then I can work on other stuff. I built two raised garden beds in the greenhouse this late summer. I have some radishes, lettuce and broccoli growing, but it's been so cold that they're barely hanging on.

I can't wait to have a kitchen again so I can store ingredients and cook.

Understood. We Lived in North Tennessee up until May of this year and had 1 acre but it was completely covered by Old Growth Oak Trees. So there was no growing vegetables.
Now we live in our old family home in Birmingham AL. I have 4.5 Acres today of woods with no clearings. I am buying both 3 plus acre lots on either side of us but they too are wooded hills and hollers.

Once finished I should be able to clear out 3 or 4 acres of hill top to farm on.

Well I have learned a lot about BYC today. This may not be a place for preppers, homesteaders or farmers. In my opinion for what its worth.

But here we are. So I have a question Do you raise your quail for meat or for pets?

I am very open and honest about how and why I raise Coturnix Quail. I give these birds the best life possible for 8 weeks with one bad moment before they go into the freezer. I still consider myself new at this way of living. Quail are new to me this year. But we have raised many chickens over the years for egg production and pest control.
One thing I do know is we all do this differently and that's OK.
One of my other threads was reported and locked. It happened when the sharing of pictures of roasted Quail were posted. Before I could get the recipe..... Poof they were gone.....

So if this one doesn't get deleted maybe we can post recipes below and come together over supper.
It is a place for all 3. I think what you criticize and complain about would happen anywhere on the internet. Having respect for people who disagree with you, as most here do, makes having a community composed of people with different view points not degenerate into constant argument and complaint.

I am easy to get along with. What I have learned and stated in here elsewhere is that there are many roads to get to the same destination. I feel what we do here is the best practice and we have studied and took advice from others who are looking to to raise quail in a homestead fashion.

If other want pets I won't force my opinion on how I raise for meat. But I have been criticized a lot since I showed up for not raising mine as they do.

Just finished processing about 50 extra quail roosters and about 15 hens that didn't make the breeding program. All in fridge taking an overnight saltwater bath then will drain rinse and put back in fridge for 2 more days, then will have me a good supper and freeze the rest. Looks like you have a fine supper there yourself ENJOY.

Thanks, we culled 23 that day and have more to do in the coming week. I am working 120 through the brooder and starting a 3 week cycle of incubating to start getting more meat for the freezer.

We are very new to Quail. I wanted to brine ours in Salt water but my wife read it makes the meat tougher. So we didn't. She baked them but they were still a little tough. I guess you learn.
