Granny's gone and done it again

One thing I noticed this morning when cooking up some of Maggie's eggs was the yolks are much darker than store bought eggs. Is that because they are tan colored eggs?
The orange yolks are from vegetable pigments (xanthophylls) in the things they eat. Leafy greens and grass are particularly good for them. Orange yolks indicate a varied and healthy diet, and generally a healthier egg. Some egg producers cheat and feed marigold petals or chili peppers (or synthetic chemicals), which turn the yolks orange but don't add nutrition.
The chickens store extra pigments. You can see bright yellow legs on a Leghorn in the spring, and at the end of laying season, her legs will be pale. Her yolks will also get paler as she depletes her pigment supply. This is especially true with my hens, as the dry summers don't provide a lot of fresh greenery. Our best eggs are in the spring.

Well with all the mowing I do around here (the remington lays it down like a hay cutter) mine get lots and lots of green stuff.

Ha ha ha, was just looking at a thread called 14 week old Polish.. Owner should have named one Nancy. That's a 'blowout' if I've ever seen one.

Oh, now I remember too... smallest chick in the brooder (he's about half the size of the rest) insists on doing tricks.. Riding in flying saucers, jumping into the cottage cheese container to get first dibs on incoming food.. He/she's a funny little critter. Not afraid of anything.

Only $12 at the grocery. That’s our evacuee houseguest in the first pic. I need a frame for that painting, then it will look lovely and tropical.
