My Dad did that to my hair in middle school. I was not a fan.

I quit letting my dad trim/cut my hair when he tried to cut my younger brother ear lobe off. The IDIOT (brother) just sat there with blood dripping/running down his neck. I said NOPE I will use my allowance money instead.
