Merele has the black on grey.

Merle can mean lots of things.

Black on grey
red on light red
dark blue on blue

and cryptic, appearing non merle but carrying the merle gene (I suspect your dog is cryptic, if you hypothetically bred it to another dog, the puppies would probably turn out merle)

and if it is AKC registered I'd report that breeder.

they're lying on the dogs paperwork. Merle Schnauzers cannot be registered

It was ok. Just getting back from putting hubby to bed. He was wandering today. Had to go get him from around the corner. First time in a while. Glad he's in bed now. Took a bit. Our son and daughter-in-law that moved in to help are leaving for California tommorow. Going to our grandsons wedding...that makes him our son's nephew. They're buds. I'll miss them being gone.

I am pretty sure you are correct on the schnauzer standard. But people like all the variation so breeders bred for what can sell for the most money.

The reasons certain colors are faulted from a standard is because of health reasons for the most part.
