Yes, sadness. But ... What an amazing piece of literature. And so eye-opening. I think I was about ten the first time I read it. And have read it many times since.

Here is my Gracie, guarding the chicks. It was their first day out, and her first day to be with them. She spent about 15 minutes watching them and getting acquainted, then she turned and faced outward like a good guardian. Didn't even react when one came and pulled on her tail.
