ditto on the mites    mine do NOT like you squirting the liquid down into their ear canal  but MAN do the love the rubbing of the ear to make sure it squishes and oozes everywhere.    Q tips with also help with cleaning and getting deeper into the canal

it looks red, swollen . I see white scabbing on the outer edges Its possible it could be infected . If its ear mites he has had them for a long time. I think it is but could of possibly got an infection from scratching. You need to clean as much of that gunk out as you can with a towel or washcloth No q-tips. Leave that mess for the vets .

I do it myself all the time and my Vet uses q-tips herself q tips for humans is bad shoves the wax past the hourglass shape of the ear canal and then builds up
