They will kill your chickens first chance they get.
Several years ago I was contacted by a Family from Davis that had been keeping chickens for two years. They had been diligent at closing the coop each night but slipped up and left their coop open for one night only. Raccoons killed all but one of their chickens!

I sold them two about the same age as their survivor. They learned their lesson!

Not giving them one. I think they kill smaller birds, right?
No, one killed three of my chickens in one night. Squeezed in through 2"x4" welded wire. Came back the next night , i killed it. I put another layer of different wire on top.

Haven't lost any birds to possums...YET. But I know they eat the eggs that I accidentally leave out.
Maybe possums are different in CA. Never had them bother our chickens, just eat eggs and I imagine they would eat young chicks if they could get one. This goes all the way back 50 years with the farm chooks we had when I was a kid. Same with skunks, never a problem. Raccoons, weasels (horrid weasels), fox, and loose dogs are what occasionally killed our birds. Raccoons are the worst offenders.
I leave possums be because they eat ticks and don't carry rabies. Worst they've done here is eat fruit on the trees. Turkeys are worse for that. They get on smaller branches and break the trees all up.
Come to think of it, I haven't seen a possum around here in years.

We found a possum in our coop one evening when we went to close up the chickens for the night. It was backed up in the far corner and it sat there and hissed at us a bit. All the chickens were roosted, many of them directly above it, looking a bit nervous, but the possum didn't bother any of them. I suspect it was after the eggs. We scootched it out with a broom and never saw it again. Raccoons, on the other hand ...
