Christmas tree for cat owners

I have a cousin in Ethel, MO. Is that where this fella is from? If so I might put a bug in his ear of what's going on and they'll likely take care of it pronto!
No, Ethel is about 10 miles from where we live as the crow flies. There are a lot of Amish communities around the north eastern part of Missouri. Each community from what we understand comprises a given number of miles. For instance the community we are in the middle of is south of state route 156. North of 156 it is a completely different community and it shows.

The Amish around us appear to be ummmm...slobs? Yeah that is the right word. Debris, equipment, broken down buildings, etc cluttering their property. Houses and yards are for the most part tidy but other than that they look like side sets for a Mad Max movie. In all honesty the Amish man involved keeps his property tidy in comparison with most. But this community's attitude towards non Amish isn't the best. We've always tried to treat them with respect. We don't 'dust' them when we pass them with our car, we frequent their businesses, if somebody has problems with a rig or horse in front of our property we lend them a hand and we have told them that if their kids are being harassed have them come up to our house for safety.

This isn't the first time we have had to nudge the guy in order to get the straw he owes us but it's the first time that he's dropped the ball completely. But in dropping the ball he's really put us in a bad spot as far as coming up with the straw/bedding we need to get us over the winter months. He still may come through but we are doubting it at this point.

A friend told my husband. When a 'big city' person cheats you, you sort of expect it but when a 'country' person does the cheating it makes you realize what a sorry shape the world is in.

The good news is that our pasture grows really nice grass and we won't have a problem finding somebody who will harvest it for hay next year. Hopefully somebody who will be honest with us. I mean, seriously, how hard would it be to drop a note off saying he was having trouble coming up with wheat straw for us but hadn't forgotten about us? It's like, well, they're old, they'll forget about it if I don't come through. That is the big insult. We had to contact him. I thought we were done begging people for what they owed us when we retired. Guess I was wrong.

We live about 7 miles away from La Plata MO, Troyer.

Hello and welcome! Yes, i have 4 adults and a bunch of kids.View attachment 3323110
OMG! Cap! I thought you had a rule about only what was it...3 goats? Looks like Goat Math has a firm grip on you.

They are so adorable. I see about three I would toss in the back of our big van and bring home with me...if you weren't so darn far away that is.

Morning all. Got our first snow of the season over night. Looks like a little over 2 inches but everything is sugar frosted and beautiful. Except I didn't get my netting taken down last night and I bet real money it's on the ground.

I am former amish, we left the lifestyle twenty-ish years ago. I know of the La Plata community and it's type of people so I'm not overly surprised at how he is treating you.
The bishop or deacon of the community is usually the "boss". If you know who the bishop is you could go and talk to him and see if he would be willing to twist some arms a bit.

Thanks Troyer. I thought about that. Unfortunately finding out who the Bishop is will be a challenge as they aren't forthcoming with that information. I have the feeling that this group isn't urged to mingle with a lot of Non Amish as it is.

This is kind of a shock to us. Mose has always been friendlier to non Amish than most around here. When his horse fell in front of our house last winter we helped him get her back on her feet. We gave them about a half bushel of apples last fall. We thought we could count on him.

My dad was Pennsylvania Duetch. Not Amish but his mothers maiden name appears in the listing of Amish surnames. Dad passed in 06 so that information is lost to us. I'm not ignorant to the lifestyle though and can speak a splattering of the dialect.

One of them was around once and I said something in Pennsylvania Duetch to one of their kids and the dad blinked at me and said, you understand what we are saying when we talk Duetch around you. I just smiled illusively as I was tired of the women holding conversations around me that I couldn't understand.

IMHO to do that is just plain rude. They stopped doing it though which was a win win in my book.

My wifes' neice and husband are planning on moving to the La Plata community. We are happy to hear they are moving, but not happy that they are going to such a place. Maybe it's a step out of the area they're in and the general corruption they have to put up with where they are. There's bad apples everywhere, some are just much worse than others.

I would like to have a word with him though, there are things that can be done to make them step up when needed.

The community north of 156 is much different from the one to the south where we are. The community around us lost about half of the residents due to some conflict with the local Bishop. Couldn't get anyone to tell us what it was but the father of the family we bought our farm from was one of the community 'elders?' and he left the community when Ervin, (the man we bought our farm from) and his family left.

I know the community to the north has immaculate houses and grounds, they are allowed to use ATVs (just saw an Amish guy tending his fences using one). I think some use cell phones for their businesses. It's just different than the community we live in the middle of.

Maybe your wife's niece and family can inject a bit of fresh air into the community. I know there hasn't been a lot of new faces around for a long time.
