Granny's gone and done it again

Morning all, survived the night. Its -5 and feels like -27 I cant believe I used to go tend chickens in this. I guess some things are a hidden blessing. I sure do miss them though. I have been missing Star a lot lately . She was such a good girl.
Nancy and I saw a big dog on the side of the road yesterday and we didnt know if it had been hit or not so we doubled back to check on it. It took off like a bat from hell. I feel sad for it and all the other animals in this cold. There are a ton of birds on my front porch trying to get out of this wind. They are sitting like the chickens do. squatting to protect their toes, all fluffed up and head under the wing.
Are you getting any snow or ice?

It was -11 when I got up this morning. Windchill around -38 but yeah, the danged wind is gusting almost to 40.

I went out and carried 4 gallons of hot water to the birds along with a dozen hot hard boiled eggs smashed for them to enjoy. They aren't fairing well in this cold. The poor little bantams are huddled in a corner and the rest are on the roost bars fluffed up like basketballs. I chipped out a water hole in one of the big bowls and it refroze within 20 minutes.

So I trudged down to the barn and dragged out a bale of straw and put it down between the two coops for extra insulation. I'm seriously afraid if I don't put up a heat lamp I will have fatalities to this cold. I have one outlet that is safely secured that I could put one in. I used it last year during the day, turned it off at night and it helped them a lot.

Every time we get weather like this all I can think is....we sold the property in Florida.WHAT WERE WE THINKING?

Cap made a "cage" for her heat lights that stopped them from making fire or the chickens breaking it.
