Granny's gone and done it again

It's only a problem when food is involved.
You should still make a point of proving your superiority any time you are around her. A broom is perfect because you won't hurt her and it gives you a long reach. Hopefully she will learn respect and you can put the broom away.
The top hen only has to look at another to get them to submit. You rarely see the alpha hen resort to pecking or attacks. I find it's the hens that are close to the bottom who commit most of the aggression. I think they are trying their best to not be the lowest.

Thanks. I understand what you are saying and I will certainly take your advice. This may be challenging bc I use a cane but I'll do my best to make sure she gets the message. She was always very bold and independent even as a chick. I thought she might be a cockerel early on. She often hung out by herself instead of with the other chicks, and was the first to find ways to get out of the pen and into mischief. I named her Merida after the main character in the animated feature "Brave." The other 3 Speckled Sussexes don't even have names.

Well, those Sussex can be a little special. :D Too pretty to eat, though.
You can bump her with your cane if that's easier. I have a food crazed Delaware that gets overzealous when the treats come out. I don't let her jump on me, but the boys thought it was cute, so she keeps trying with them.
