So what is the purpose of "giving something up" during Lent? Is it to gain points with God? Or to get a closer relationship with Him in some way? I'm not being flip, I really want to know. When I was Catholic we did it because we were told to but I don't remember understanding why.

personally, I think it's an attempt to understand suffering in a very MINOR way like Christ went through for all of us.
