Granny's gone and done it again

One of the all time favorite heirloom tomatoes is the Mortgage Lifter. That tomato has a rich history of hybridization.
I don't know that kind but Mom had some that were shaped like a Roma but bigger and very solid. Hardly any seeds. Red and very sweet. We peeled them and could packed them whole. They were good on sandwiches over winter. Stayed in one piece. But they split real easy during wet weather. We always saved the seeds.
Mom was a good gardener and good cook.
With a touchy stomach it took the joy out of gardening and cooking for me

Is it about what scientist do to seeds?
It's about how Luther Burbank created so many new things variety wise I think. He was beyond a Master Gardener. He gave Master Gardeners the tools to work with variety wise. Burbank plums, peaches, and more. One of the things that came out a few years ago are the crosses between plums and apricots... A totally new fruit. Some things have been done with cherries too. I believe a cherry and plum have been crossed now. This could happen in nature but until the fruit would have fallen to the ground and sprouted a new tree no one would have know about it.

The mortgage lifter got it's name after an auto mechanic set out to develop a big slicing tomato. He crossed over and over again among the largest tomatoes of his day until he eventually got one that bred true. He sold enough plants to pay off the mortgage on his house that was over $6000 which was a lot of money when he did.

My GF grafted several varieties of apples on one tree. That tree is no longer standing but it's pretty neat

I keep dozing off. lol Come time for me to turn everything else off my eyes will pop open. I finally got Tom to bed. I don't think he will stay there long. He has slept this whole day away. Not feeling good at all
On the other hand SD called from ER. They were fixing to send her home w/ different antibiotics. Nuro came in and the next thing we know, She is being wheeled off for ER surgery! They went back in her skull again and removed a ton of infection. Including some tissue that had to come out too. They had to intubate her and she still had that in her in recovery room but surgeon said she did well. They will keep her for a couple days on IV antibiotics.
