The higher you go, the less pressure there is and the air molecules spread out and cool off. Things heat up when molecules vibrate and bounce off each other. If the molecules are spread out, there is less to bounce against. That's why it's super cold in space. Our atmosphere is a thin precious layer of warm air.@Wishing4Wings I have another question. I can't remember the answer. If heat rises, why can you be driving through the mountains and sometimes only have snow on the mountain tops? I use to understand this but I've forgotten over the years.
