Granny's gone and done it again

That's an awesome idea camp.

Especially the read to the animals thing. Animals aren't going to judge and laugh if you stumble over words.

That's strange they limit like that. Huh. Do you have a local library (public library not school one) instead?

That's exactly the point, on animals.

Yes, we went to the public library Saturday and got the one she wanted. She had finished it the next day.

I want to set up a reading program with rewards and prizes. I think I can get the bookmobile out, too. Last year the highest AR score in 4th grade was 30-something. Second highest was 10. Which means everyone in 4th grade was lower than that.

Also, DD wants to get diary of a wimpy kid from the school library, but she can't because she's in 3rd grade and it's a 5th grade reading level. She can only get books at level from the school.

ALSO it would be fun to get the animals involved for the kids to read to. Both mine take turns reading to the baby duck. I've heard about it in other schools with dogs, which I think Jasper could do. Plus the cochins and a couple of the nice cockerels.

SO: a weekly program at the camp with the bookmobile and animals to read to. Incentives like prizes for goals reached (number or types of books). Prizes like bookstore gift cards, book sets, maybe a top prize of a week of camp?

So they’ve not been sticking to the AR program requirements to move up reading levels? Or they are not passing tests? Or just not reading? 30 & 10 points are ridiculous for 4th grade. The points get higher on books as the reading level increases.

WE have a super nice AR store that is funded through PTO. That has been a big help since they can go in and spend their AR pts on things. It ranges from pencils, purses, toys, and they even have big stuff like tablets and iPods but they cost a lot of pts. (It also teaches saving) not saying to get super fancy with prizes but variety to choose from
are good.

In mom’s library she has reading buddies (stuffed animals of different shapes and sizes)for the little ones. We also have honor lists for 3/4, 5/6 grades. We had a couple 3rd graders last year with 100pts.

SO permission slips, sponsors (for prizes) and tons of organizing. What about time? All year? Certain days of the week? How will you track pts?

I think it’s a great idea camp! Might do some tweaking to make it more appealing, is it just for one grade?

Well first I need to learn more about the programs that the school library has currently. It's book fair right now, I could talk to the librarian pretty easily. It would be easier to build from something already there.

The school is k-12, so I'd love it to be school wide, no grade restrictions. We could have 3 or 4 different "sections" or classes for achievements.

And after school, so no real permission slips because the parents would have to bring them. I could even set up a "lounge" with coffee, sofas, and phone charges for grown ups. ;)

:thumbsup If you look up renaissance place on the Internet and go there it will tell you all about AR. And tell you the requirements for each reading level. :)
