The boxelder bug is a North American species of true bug. It is found primarily on boxelder trees, as well as maple and ash trees. The adults are about 12.5 millimetres long with a dark brown or black colouration, relieved by red wing veins and markings on the abdomen; nymphs are bright red.

The Hemiptera /hɛˈmɪptərə/ or true bugs are an order of insects comprising some 50,000 to 80,000 species[3] of groups such as the cicadas, aphids, planthoppers, leafhoppers, and shield bugs. They range in size from 1 mm (0.04 in) to around 15 cm (6 in), and share a common arrangement of sucking mouthparts.[4] The name "true bugs" is sometimes limited to the suborder Heteroptera.[5] Many insects commonly known as "bugs" belong to other orders; for example, the lovebug is a fly,[6] while the May bug and ladybug are beetles
