I understand genetics, but don't know the specifics of the color genes. To be sex linked, the color in question has to be located on the sex chromosomes. In chickens, the short chromosome is with the female, so females will show linked recessive traits. That's why in barred birds, the males will look lighter, as they get 2 barring genes and thicker white bars on their feathers. Females only get one copy of the barring gene (because the other is missing from the short sex chromosome) so barred females have thinner white barring and look darker.

I am not sure if chocolate is sex linked. I thought I had read it works with a dilution gene, but not sure. It also depends on what colors your EE carry. I can try to look it up later, but have to get going now to pick up the kid from school. Remind me later, because I will probably forget.

Chocolate Male X Chocolate Female = 100% Chocolate

Chocolate Male X Black Female = 50% Black Males carrying (split male) Chocolate, 50% Chocolate Females

Black Male X Chocolate Female = 50% Black Males carrying (split male) Chocolate, 50% Black Female
Split Male X Chocolate Female = 25% Chocolate Males, 25% Black Males carrying (split male) Chocolate, 25% Chocolate Females, 25% Black Females
Split Male X Black Female = 25% Black Males carrying (split male) Chocolate, 25% Black Males, 25% Chocolate Females, 25% Black Females.

I just helped a person out with the same question today!
