Granny's gone and done it again

Okay, see ya later! 1 egg from the Wyandotte pullet. I know because it is small. This is my second Wynadotte and both lay small eggs. Twist's experience with his matches mine. You will love the huge New Hamp eggs. My NH is 5 yrs old and still going strong too.

good to hear as I now have 35 plus ?? of them as chicks in the brooder room. Rooster is very pretty for a red/orange/brownish chicken

. Waiting online to pick my kids up then home. Already lost 2 chicks I may not make it back from this one...

I am trembling like a leaf still. Them that dont know me will call me a lier and them that do will say I have gone off the deep end. But, heres what happened :
Killer was off her nest so I knew the chick was dead. I went to look and sure enough. it was gone. stone cold froze. never finished the hatch. Wondering if it bled out or its yolk absorbed I pried it from the shell. , rigamortis had set in. yolk was gone and just a drop of blood . I held it in my hand while I checked the other nests. Nothing yet. I set it down for a min or so then picked it back up so I could toss it over the hill. gathered my other stuff and headed out. I opened my hand and I had a spot of blood on me. I thought it strange cause dead chicks dont bleed right ? but its ice cold, surely its dead. whats wrong with me ? Of course its dead Then people , it took a breath, more like a gasp I guess, just one. I was startled and thought maybe I caught it just as it was dying cause no more but then about 30 seconds later another breath ! WTH ??? I dropped everything in my hands and went as fast as I could to the house. The bleeding was getting worse ! It was alive but it was dead. I know it was dead. I showed it to Tom, made him feel it. stone cold dead ! then a 3rd breath and I realized the warmth from my hand was bringing this chick back . OMG. I was shaking so hard. surprised I didnt drop it. Tom got the corn starch and I held it in my hand under a heat lamp. I stood there and watched that chick as it slowly started breathing more regular then a small movement then a peep. I cried . I stood there with that chick for a good half hr. maybe more, IDK. Its in a box now, sleeping. I did see an eye open

It is making a clicking sound when it breathes and I dont know what to do. It has dried membrane and shell stuck to it. bleeding has stopped. It hasnt tried to stand and who knows if it will make it or not. I would assume it is very weak . I dont have vitamins and with the clicking I would be afraid to give it anything orally

OMG Ya'll

that sounds so sweet. There was a couple times I was on the receiving end of such actions.  My mom was the "smack upside the head" kinda woman.  A boy sent me a note once, said when I am with you I feel like a king. I never seen the note. Mom intercepted and wrote back, Stay away from my daughter or I will crown you.

Your mom sounds like a hoot! Reminds me of my grandpas family. The women weren't too friendly with the men and grandpa was a social bird.

Well looks like I lost my two Cochin hens

The ones that just had babies. I was fearing it my babies or the juvenile ones. Not happy about losing the two momma but it wasn't as bad as I thought.

I'm sorry for your loss dearie

Granny, @ronott1 said "it's not dead until it's warm and dead", and this is so true! I found a couple that were cold and stiff, and like you I assumed rigor, but was wrong. Anyway, now I get them warmed up, then once they are warm and more alert I will drip a drop of NutriDrench in their mouth, then do that with gatorade. The clicking is not a good sign, so don't get your hopes up, some will get better, but others will die. Did that help at all?
