Sorry for you h2o. It's forking hot out your way! We are cooling down okay, the breeze is giving us some cooler air from the coast. News just said 88 for us tomorrow. I think I can face that without tears.
I saw on youtube or someplace a DIY air conditioner that uses a block of ice inside a chest with holes cut for a simple small fan to blow cold air out the front. Will work for a single room. Only pay for cost of the ice and running a 6" fan. Save you some money.

Vestibular disease in geriatric dogs is often mistaken for stroke. The vertigo caused by the disease can be particularly intense in older dogs with symptoms of nausea, difficulty or complete inability to stand up, head tilt, nystagmus, and circling.

I had an elderly dog with this. I thought certain I would be told euthanasia when I took her in, but thank goodness I was told as you were.
Did your vet recommend Dramamine (dimenhydrinate)? If not, you might ask about it.
This alleviated my dog's symptoms and she lived several more years. I think they might have also given steroids, but not sure. Over ten years ago.
