I have a crazy pullet, the Welsummer. She has finally started to lay, but what a production to produce that tiny little pullet egg! First she screams for hours to let the whole neighborhood know she is expecting. While screaming, she paces back and forth in the coop, going from box to box, screaming. She paces back and forth behind the back of the shed, jumping up on a low shelf thingy along the back and clunking around some glass bottles we have stored there. Did I mention she is screaming all the while? After a bit (4 hours on a good day), the screaming intensifies, if that's possible, and when I go out to check, the noise seems to be coming from overhead, and... did you guess? Yes, she is 15 ft up on top of the shed. One day she was up in the buckeye tree in front of the shed. Usually I just catch her or lure her back into the chicken yard with some treats, but today I stuck her in the ground cage, away from everyone, with a piece of kale. I thought she would scream in protest, but she was totally quiet for the few hours I left her in there. (Thank heavens!) When I got her out to put her back, I found one shredded kale leaf and a tiny brown egg. Maybe she just wants privacy? It's an awful lot to take for one puny egg.
