Hmm, gives a whole new meaning to "chicken feeder".

They dont completely stop laying in molt do they ?

Mine always do. And often they don't start back up until mid February.

Normally they stop because the protein is used to make new feathers instead of eggs.

Besides that it is sorta hard for a nearly bald moulting hen to cover a bunch of chicks.
