They definitely don't want it back! You still get to figure out what to do with a rooster. Really sucks for people who live where it is illegal to keep roosters. Don't know how many of those people will eat them. I'm guessing well under a majority since they live in town and are more likely to be "they are kind of pets" people rather than "they are farm animals" people.

In our case we were going to keep him, DD1 was just going to have to suck up the possibility that the eggs might be fertile. Collected at least once a day, no way they would develop. But because they COULD have developed into chickens IF they were brooded/incubated she has an issue with that. But no way I am going to buy store eggs if I have chickens laying them!

BUT he and the hen that raised that batch (starting at 3 weeks) had a misunderstanding and he started attacking her even from across the yard. Ripped right into her neck from the back and no he was NOT trying to breed her. We gave him to a couple that sells maple syrup at the farmer's market. Silly boy didn't stay with the rest of their chickens and the protective dog and a coon got him within 2 days (unless they ate him and lied to keep DD1 from being upset). But why take a Barnevelder to eat when they had plenty of mutt cockerels running around?

A chick doesn't eat much in 11 weeks. The catalog says a chick will eat just over 6 pounds through the first 11 weeks. That is < $2. Less if they are allowed outside all day every day after they are old enough. My last 2 batches found their own way out of the barn by 3 weeks of age. Lots of tasty things out there for a chick! I'm not sure of their estimate though. I'm going through 50 pounds in 2 weeks for 19 grown hens, winter, no outside food available. That is 1.3 pounds a week per hen. Seems unreasonable that a puny chick would eat near that much. I never made it through the 5 pound bag of starter with the last 3 batches before they began eating out of the big girls' feeder starting at about 2 weeks.

honestly what real good does that do a person ?? I mean your still out the feed, time, and effort to raise the roo in the first place AND then the number of desired/ordered pullets is mucked up as well.

In this case it gave me back about $12, the Barnevelders are't all that cheap . No extra effort or time to raise one extra chick. Never get 10 if the hatchery guarantees 90% or you won't get a refund But you are right it does screw with the "how many pullets do I want laying this fall". So far I have ordered 4 times. Quantities: 12, 7, 7, 6. First was from Ideal, the rest from Meyer. Only 1 cockerel in those 4 orders. Figured I was lucky the first 2 times, per the statistics, someone got at least 1 if not 2 cockerels that I would have been stuck with Meyer got it right with the Barnevelder I ordered this year to replace "Trouble". Unfortunately one of the Golden Campines came up missing at barn closing time this summer so I have only 5 pullets ... and the other Campine has not yet started laying Of course she is likely more "yard art" for DD1 than "laying machine". She likes "Cuuute !!" birds.

Working on the hoop coop today. Need to find the hog rings for connecting the welded wire to the back wall. Not as much progress as I wanted but somebody kept moving my tools when I put them down.
These are not going to be big. Just 8X8 inside, but should be enough for the roosters so I can fatten them to process them and then raise new chicks once Spring comes.
Just have to figure out the door and frame. I had blueprints for one but now I can't find them.... I am not a build on the fly type. I am more build with a plan and instructions type. Now I can modify to fit but I need the basics.

BTW that is helper Child in the one picture stapling the bottom of the welded wire to the board.

Thank you I got my first card today. The kids hung it up on my bedroom door. I smiled when I saw Santa. My kids all "believe" so they are not discussing how Santa has magic and believing in him renews his Christmas magic. LOL
