Granny's gone and done it again

Alright, now don’t get suspicious. These are unrelated circumstances.

So I’ve been chatting with the head of the rescue group, the one who kept trying to organize Hank’s transport. Her mother lives nearby camp and had Great Pyrenees for a long time, but they passed recently, probably old age. There was one out there recently that was acting like a pup, so I assumed they picked up a new one.

In talking with the lady today, she offered me the Great Pyrenees. We were talking about my farm, and she said the pup is bored to death living in a pen. She said she couldn’t believe she hadn’t thought about it sooner, then asked if I needed coyote control. BOY DO I.

So I told her I would have to look into the logistics of it, for housing him maybe near the pond where the ducks are. I’ve heard they’re not great with strangers, so we’d either have to pen him during the day and let him roam at night during the summer, which is feasible, or just not have him. I don’t know how “trainable” they actually are.

I know Kelly is getting pups, but I need to specifically learn about the Great Pyrenees.
The pyr we got was afraid of people when we first got him but he bonded with me. I suspect the former owner abused the dog because it kept going under the fence. Pretty much the only way to contain them is electric fence. They can squeeze through some very tiny spaces. In time the dog learned to like hubby but remained suspicious with strangers. He never tried to bite anyone.

Who wants to start breeding pigeons? I have the male!

How trainable are you? :D What sort of fencing do you have? A GP can climb a 4' fence with ease, not sure a 5' would be much of a challenge without that 5' mark being hot. If you are doing field fence make sure it is knotted or woven NEVER welded. Penning the dog all day wouldn't be ideal. Not much better than what it has now. Given you are running a camp for kids, seems to me ANY dog would be a legal liability if it can come in contact with the kids. GPs aren't generically aggressive toward people but they will protect what they view as their responsibility to guard.
