You really need to start with balanced water (pH and all) and add some live plants, let that sit for a couple of weeks then put in one or two hardy fish and wait. It is going to be hard with no way to test the water.

Guess what I am doing. I got the whole thing tore down. tank rinsed and rocks getting ready to rinse new gravel. I found sand or something on the bottom that came out of the gravel and something sprouted. LOL I saved that. The new filter was black and dark brown. Like my lungs. I tossed all the old gravel. I still aint gonna have enough gravel.

Get the pea gravel at Lowes. Rinse well. Done.

Tomorrow I will take pics, today I was busy cleaning up the mess from the tree I cut down. And putting away tools I thought I might need to haul the coop off the trailer. I left all that out when I took off to get the picnic table and slide.
I did get perches cut and installed in the flight cage, and the big door has hinges on. Also made a little poop board shelf to install over the waterer so the birds don't perch on top and poop in the water.

I hope to get the test kit next month. Not that far off. Im filling it right now and I wish I could steal some water from my other tank but I cant find my hose.

Bruce, I looked at plants yesterday. I was tickled to see them. The only moss they had was a moss ball and it looks so ugly. The plants didnt have hardy guides on them and were $10. & up.

I am very tired today, and having all that company wore me out. Plus moving the wood pile...moving tree limbs. It was really too hot for all that. What I need to do is try and rest tomorrow, because I am going to go get hay monday.
