Worked the same way with my kids. 4 days off isn't enough time for a trip that takes 1 day each way if flying (and too expensive anyway) or by train, 2-3 if driving. Not quite the same as if they are at school a few hours driving distance.
The dorm food is really top notch. What he's really looking forward to is driving... the freedom to go when and where he wants (with in reason!). I said no car freshman year so he will be less independent and depend on friends for the occasional ride... meaning he has to make the effort to make friends... so far so good!
Yes, 16 hr drive home for him, so not the easiest. He's welcome to lug laundry home, but I won't be doing it! He's not one of those helpless kids... very self sufficient, like his dad, who is watching football and folding clothes as I type. I sure do. I like that thing Twist showed me but its not in my near future. I want a new chair so badly. I have wanted one for a few years now.
