Granny's gone and done it again

I have a itchy dog question. Scooter has been scratching at his eyes and face for several weeks, sometimes his ears too, on the outside. He's losing the hair around his eyes and sometimes the skin gets pink and thickened. I treated him for fleas, but there never was any sign he ever had them. I have washed his face and eyes. Can't see any signs of anything wrong with the skin on his face or head. His ears look clean. It's getting really obsessive. Any ideas?

I am considering having Rod and Vicky stay in the truck on the first weigh in and then get out when we go back to be weight empty. BUT, pretty sure my "catholic " will kick in before that happens.

thickened skin sounds familiar like exema(sp) or something.
