Granny's gone and done it again

Mornings all
Cindy,, whos dogs are they ?
Raining here. More ants. or ants still I should say. They sucked the first bait trap dry.
Get some more bait. It will work eventually. Scary to think how many ants you must have there. They are limited by the dry summers here. I have to put DE around the waterers to keep the ants out.

I have baby fry in one tank, wrigglers in another and eggs laid today in another tank. A TON of eggs.
Guppies or Angels?

Honey Badger, I'm Homeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! Charging up the phone so I can download a few picks I got.
Picked up 4 black boids this morning and dropped off the two BR cockerels that I got into the kennel easily. They all traveled well on the go to and return trip. The 4 black boids I picked up settled right into the kennel as soon as it was in the back of the Jeepster. As if they KNEW it was okay and better days were ahead. Put 3 of the 4 out in the big coop with the 3 BSL (2Cs and 1P). What a stink! But I was there with the rake handle letting the big boys know their behavior was not acceptable and that ended that. The 3 new ones jumped up on the roosting bar and headed into the hen house for a nice roost. I did take a pic of an egg (medium sized egg) laying on the ground. The kid said he had nesting boxes in the shed (3 sided) but they wouldn't lay in them. I could see why, it was on the ground.

Now, the interesting part for those that want to continue to read.. Based on the type of comb (Shape and size) I know pretty much for certain I have 3 hens out of the bunch and maybe one cockerel. They are just over 41 weeks of age and came from a big breeder down here that said they were "Black Astrolorp" crosses, but I highly doubt it. I think he's going for Black Asians, so they have to have some Asian blood in there. He also said there was some silkie blood which gives them the black skin, etc. But I'm not seeing that at all, nor did I see any Black Astrolorp in any of them. You will see from the picks I took they are smaller than my BSL's by quite a bit. From the hackle and neck feathers, all appear to be hens, but one thing is bothering me.. All of them have spurs. And I do mean SPURS! They are not aggressive in the least, and are somewhat flighty. I put food and water in the hen house where they decided to rest. I felt bad about leaving the 2 BR boys there since they are only feeding whole corn to the ones they have, and that is quite a few.. He started out with around 400 of the danged birds, and is down to maybe 100 now.
Henri and his 'buddy/buddett' are comfy in a corner of Henri's Hideaway. Never a moment of confrontation between the two of them.. some circling, then boop, pals.
Like granny said, you got 5 toed hens. That makes it much easier to figure out part of their breed make up!
But, just so ya know, a hen can get spurs. Both of the Wellsummers I've had got them and one of my cream legbars has them.

I noticed in the pic you posted before how overbred they all are. Poor girls. How many roosters do they have in there anyway? :(
Oh, and a little extra protein for them will help grow out the bare patches faster.

Cornbread got done before the soup. I never seen soup so hard to make and frankly it aint all that. Tom has already asked for PB &J w/o tasting it.
:tongue For an old guy, Tom is kind of a baby sometimes!
Give the old codger a hug from me.

But we use drip irrigation so it doesn’t apply?
Are you getting blossom end rot on drip? Maybe try less water... let it dry out a bit between waterings.
Put crushed shell under the drip.

Don't know what happened to my other quotes from you, but your new pullets are adorable! :love And that's a pretty nifty Ameraucana boy. Hard to see from the pics... does he have gold leakage?

So cute!!! And does that cockerel really have BLUE legs? They look sky blue on me screen. Love it!

Could only have been worse if it killed my little quail! It did bite me!
What kind of snake was it?
I see the gopher snakes around still. And hoping the king snakes are alive and well... Our next door neighbor killed a 3+ foot rattlesnake last week. :hmm It was right outside his garage. Mostly we are thrilled to have snakes around getting rid of pests, but a rattler wouldn't be too welcome.

I don't have any good pics, but we have scads of adolescent quail running around! It was a great second hatch apparently. Must have had 30 birds in the yard this afternoon, and most of them were youngsters. They are looking for water and I have some out around the yard. Think I need to add more!

Sadly, the quail being in the yard so much attracts the hawks. The Scrub family do a pretty good job of annoying the hawks away, but it still makes me hesitate to let the Seramas out to roam around like they're used to. I've only got 3 left!

I did let them out a couple times last week. They sure enjoyed themselves! I hadn't seen or heard a hawk in quite awhile, so figured it would be worth the risk. Went out the front gate, heard a hawkish sounding screech, then saw some small birds high up in the redwood across the street, going after something... hmmmm... really? The little birds took off, still not sure what they were... and then the hawk appeared at the tip of the tree, dangit! and flew off after them. Small hawk, looked like Cooper's, but they are big enough to kill my Seramas, so I scrammed back up to their coop, and they were already back inside. Haven't been out since!

No blue legs. The snake was a King snake, we have reams of those. Copperheads, garter snakes, others I am sure.

I got bit by a gopher snake when I was a kid. It was a huge one in the road and I was trying to grab it to move to a safer spot. It struck at me, but I didn't feel a thing. It wasn't until I got it off the road that I felt the blood dripping from the back of my fingers. Sharp fangs for sure!

I went to go get a snake to relocate it and it had escaped from the bag. And today I found a different snake trying it's best to kill one of the two California valley and outside! The bird was barely alive, and I pried it out of the snake's grip. That snake got an immediate transfer to another zip code! Losing patience with snakes.
I think I would have relocated it into the river. Especially if it was running high and fast.

But, just so ya know, a hen can get spurs.
Yep. Zorra had one, it was about 1.5". Just a nub on the other leg though. Haven't seen any on my Welsummers.

What's a California Valley?
