Think your talking about persimmons, pawpaws get ripe in august I think. They grew along the potamac river, I used to eat them when we hiked the trails there. We lived in Alexandria, va from 2007 to 2012.

Do they taste like a banana? I have a bunch of them in the woods behind me but I never see the fruit. Once I did then something ate them.

If you don't pick them right after it first frosts the possum & raccoons will get everyone, they love them.

Yes you can make persimmon bread by substituting them for bananas in banana bread recipe
