Someone got rich off that idea.

It's true. I remember that time. The latest around here, was cute. There were some that painted rocks, set them somewhere in town, it a regularly visited path up a canyon, then the person that finds it, would go to a site that was made for reporting the stone you found. Then, you go hide the stone. I found one in the next town over at a pizza place. In the outside of a window seal.
