Granny's gone and done it again

yes, I should of used chicken broth maybe? I put 4 pork ribs in there too.
I just start with beans and water, cook slow 10 hours, add sliced up salt pork and if I have a few smoked pork ribs I'll tear the meat up and throw it in and cook for another 4 hours.
Don't understand the bitter taste.

the butter and sugar helped a little. I didnt want to make them sweet so I only added about a tbs. of sugar but I added a whole stick of butter.
