there a reason why you keep the scratch container inside the gate with the chickens?

I don't... I keep the scratch in the well house. I get some in a container and carry it out to the chickens, who are in their large run. I go through the gate and close it behind me. That's when she jumps up and bites me - unless I'm alert and swing my cane behind me to fend her off. When I turn around and prepare to toss the scratch out to them, sometimes she'll fly up at me if she thinks I'm not fast enough. I've beaned her with the container a time or two, but it doesn't stop her. The container is an empty square margarine container.

Updates for today: Nothing new. Rained a little bit, just a bit. A little chilly outside, as usually. Shoulder hurts. Overstretched a muscle or something.

Slipped while jumping, so I fell back down “unprepared”.

Sounds like a pulled muscle. If you have a heating pad, use that, and take something like tylenol (acetaminophin) or ibuprofen as directed, and stop jumping around. You'll feel better in a few days.
