Ive heard you should bake some cookies because the smell is attractive to buyers.

I've heard that too and some have baked bread even if a loaf ready to bake from the frozen food case.

Someone has to get up early. I feed the fire at night.

We put in a "sleeper," a fairly large chunk or log, then turn the draft way down. It smolders all night, then in the morning open it back up to give it some air, add some smaller pieces and hey presto! Fresh heat!

I mostly worked night shifts.

That explains a lot.
