Granny's gone and done it again

Had a panic attack today. Haven't had one of those in years. Too much going on I guess.
Bought a fridge yesterday. Ordered it from Lowes. Thought we had the measurements right. Measured again when home because we knew there was going to be extra inches in depth for the one we chose. Thought no big deal. We'll, the height was off too. Had to go back this morning and cancel. More to the story, but ..between Gracie and this and something else..I lost it. Forgot how scary those things are. Austin asked if I needed to go to the hospital, no, I knew what it was. Crazy stuff.

Hi everyone in Grannyland! Haven't been around much. One of those stretches where you wish somebody would send you a Hallmark card for all occasions but they can't because Hallmark doesn't use that kind of language sort of stretches. But things are looking up well, more up than down these days.

I'd injured my ribs in March then turned around the first of June and injured my right shoulder.....bad. Yeah, doing something totally inappropriate for my age but it was a hellacious amount of fun. I think I tore my rotator cuff and possibly a few other tendons. Since I'm primarily right handed with a bit of ambidextrousness it really crimped my style and continuous to be a pain....in the arm. Pretty sure I need to get a steroid injection but things are still busy here.

To make matters worse, since the first of the year I have lost about 20 chickens to only God knows what. I had a bad influx of mice. These birds were well one morning and dead by sundown. Whether or not they caught something the mice dragged in or the chickens ate poisoned mice is the big question. But crying on my husband's shoulder (uninjured) about it, he reassured me that I had to do something to eliminate the mice (who's population had grown to a number that had started to chew feathers off of my chickens) so I had no choice but to use bait.

Good news is that the mouse population is under control, no more birds have suddenly dropped dead and I hatched 14 bantam chicks this spring. This will be my last hatch. My hatch rates are abysmal and I saw for the first time birth defects. Since I'm 71 now I decided to spend my golden years...platinum years? Whatever, enjoying what birds I have left.

I argued with myself about even hatching more birds and spent a lot of time in a blue funk after having lost so many birds to MD early on but decided that hatching some chicks was one way to thumb my nose at those evil fairies that love to make your chickens die off. So I took a break from forums, relaxed and tried to give my shoulder a chance to heal along with my lagging spirits. It was like, Okay, what else is left? Marek's, mystery deaths.....that leaves bolts of lightning maybe?

But my chicks are 12 and 8 weeks old respectively and doing well and nobody has dropped over dead for a few weeks so things are definitely better.

Hope everyone in Granny Land (especially you, Granny girl!) are staying healthy and happy!

Ooh, sorry to hear, Cynthia! :hugs Very scary. Glad you got through it. You're very brave!

Blue..if yhat leg is worse today I suggest you go to the ER. They would probably bring in a specialist for that. My thought.
Well .... it doesn't hurt... itches a bit and the skin redness is larger ... like an allergic reaction, I guess. But where the "bites" are, nothing's changed. Not worse ... not better. Weird.

So good to see you, Chick! :hugsWow, you have had a time of it! I had surgery for rotator cuff a couple years back. Painful, but def worth it once it healed (I'd fallen on that shoulder and messed it up pretty good). When we called an exterminator for mice, he assured me the chickens could eat the mice with no ill effects. (But I don't think they ever did.) Guess it depends what poison you use. Anyway, glad your current chicks are doing good, hope they stay that way!

Did I tell y'all I prayed about it on the way home and asked the Lord what I could put on it at home to get some relief and maybe help healing? I was thinking Vit A, D or E and maybe some charcoal ... but instead I got a strong impression that I should use ... honey! Well, I don't have medical grade honey, but ... honey is naturally sterile and antibiotic, so. When I got home I put some on a big ol' BandAid and marked the margin of the redness with a Sharpie. After a couple hours, here's the results. The redness has already receded considerably! 😄

That's the strange thing Blue. Mine don't eat the whole mice. Not unless they are very small ones. I've watched my hens stand around one that has eaten bait and on the way out like a bunch of Guinea hens watching it but leaving it alone.

I have caught them eating what they can get out of the heads, chase them down and relieve them of their treasure so I'm at a loss as to what killed them. Most were older hens, a few younger ones, no symptoms except fluffed up and standing around, eating normally, then flat out dead within 12 hours. I've been trying to figure out if there are any cross species infections that mice can pass on to poultry but I've come up with no good answers. If they had exhibited symptoms it would have been easier but nada.

The shoulder has been fun.....not. Over a week in a sling. Didn't sleep well for over a month. Pain medicine didn't help. The only thing that helped was ice packs. In the interim we have been trying to get wood harvested with me not being able to even turn the key on the tractor. Poor DH has been a champ. We thought we were done but wet weather and storms brought down a 5 foot diameter white oak tree that had died last fall so nope, more to do. I've been avoiding the doc because I know what he'll say.....and I don't react well to 'act your age'.

We also lost one of our cats. Jimmy. Just shy 14 years of age, he dropped weight suddenly and was gone in a month, just skin and bones. Cancer. So we have 4 kitties left. Jimmy's sissy, June Bug, our crazy calico, Psycho Camo, old lady Roo (18) and our ancient diabetic Cash, almost 25 years old now and hanging in there. And the 6 dogs. Can't believe the cattle dogs are 5 now and the two border collie crosses are 11...and growing old with us.

@Cynthia12, panic attacks aren't fun. Just don't sweat the small stuff and when all is said and done, it's all small stuff.

Thanks for the hug @ShrekDawg. Hugs cure a lot of woes.
