The best bait to use for a trap depends on the type of animal you're trying to catch. Here are some bait ideas for different animals:
- Mice: Use peanut butter, which is easy to use and very attractive to mice. You can also try hot dogs, which have a strong smell that pests can easily detect, or nuts like almonds, cashews, or sunflower seeds. However, avoid cheese, which can rot easily and might be taken without setting the trap off.
- Rats: Use peanut butter mixed with raisins, which provides protein and sugar that rats crave. The combination is also sticky, making it difficult for rats to get the bait without triggering the trap.
- Raccoons: Use sweet foods like marshmallows or watermelon. Make sure to position the bait so the raccoon has to fully enter the trap to reach it.
- Cats: Use fish meats or catnip oil.
- Possums: Use fish, apples, or white baits like marshmallows or eggs.
- Groundhogs: Use cantaloupe.
- Squirrels: Use seeds.
- Wasps: In the spring, use lunch meat or hamburger. In the summer and fall, use a few inches of sugar water, water with jam, soda, or fruit juice.
- Rabbits: Use vegetables that rabbits like to eat.
