It was made out of manufactured wood and installed improperly, so the top has rotted away. It would not hold up through another winter. This is how he fixed it.

And yes, there is about a half-inch gap between the patch and the door. But remembering my late cousin's admonition that "an imperfect something is better than a perfect nothing," I decided I'm happy with the job and will fill in the gap with some Great stuff or something.
