Granny's gone and done it again

@h2oratt, GC's puppy is starting to do resource guarding, should I worry? He won't let Sammy near his bowl, whether there's food in it or not. I told GC to pick up the bowl when he's done eating. Also, he's always right under GC's feet and he's started acting protective of her toward Sammy. But Sammy snapped at him first and made him squeal the other day so maybe he's just afraid of Sammy. What do you think?

Well I'm not a trainer or anything but we always let our JRTs work it out for themselves. If you do much to interfere then you always have to interfere and be on your guard which makes the dogs more antsy. Acting unbothered can be the best medicine. And taking food away is fine, but in a neutral manner, not with reprimands or anything.

As long as humans can take his food away, I think that is ok I would feed him in his crate and so he doesn’t feel the need to guard. Sounds like Sammy corrected him. He is just learning so unsure of the rules maybe. I wouldnt let him guard your GC from Sammy, maybe walk them together.

Thanks. She feeds him in her room. I'll tell her to feed in the crate. I'm not sure if he is actually "protecting" GC, or "resource guarding" her ... if he is, you know, establishing her as his territory, his "safe place" if that makes sense. I had her pet Sammy and fuss over him a little bit when he did that to show the puppy that Sammy is "family" and he has to accept him. Don't know if that got through. Sammy can be kind of a jerk too though.
