Wow.So ... GC had a terrible experience today. She got a phone call that absolutely terrified her. She even had a panic attack over it, but as soon ss she started telling me about it I told her no way, it's a scam. But she didn't believe me. She was convinced that an officer from the DOJ in TX had called her. This woman said they had found a huge bag full of drugs and $42,000 with her name and address on it and wanted to know if she had ever shipped anything like that to Mexico and told her they were running an investigation for drug dealing and money laundering! She said they did not ask for any of her ID info, SS# or anything like that, although they did find out the name of her bank. (Don't worry!) I could not convince her it was a scam. She was convinced she had been talking to legit officers of the DOJ. I told GC they don't do things that way. If they really had that kind of evidence they would carefully build up a case on her, then they would show up here with a warrant for her arrest. They wouldn't call her on the phone and ask her if she was dealing drugs and laundering money! But she was not convinced.
So I did a reverse search on the phone # and it came back to a residence in AZ. So then I called our sheriff dept and told them I thought my kid had been scammed and described what had happened. She said absolutely it was a scam. And that the DOJ would not do things this way, over the phone - exactly what I had said! My kid finally started to calm down. The sheriff's deputy said to block the number and contact the bank. Alert them to be aware of any suspicious activity on the account, like large amounts of money being deposited then withdrawn.
My poor GC! She is subject to panic attacks anyway and this did not help! I told her I wished she had alerted me right away when she got this call and she said, "They told me not to. They told me to go in a room and nobody else could be in the room with me while they talked to me."
Groan. BIG red flag!
That aggravates the daylights out of me even just hearing about it.So ... GC had a terrible experience today. She got a phone call that absolutely terrified her. Wow.
Thanks, guys. Oh believe me, it brought out the Mama Bear in me too! This girl is very vulnerable emotionally and she was a mess. When she got off the phone and came to me and said "Grandma!" I could see the anguish in her face. I truly thought somebody had died. She could hardly tell me, she was so distressed. But according to the sheriff's deputy not much can be done. They disguise the number they are calling from and it's a different one each time. They can't be traced. All you can do is hang up. But ... God knows. That aggravates the daylights out of me even just hearing about it.
